What is chair caning?

Chair caning is the skill of repairing or restoring seats in chairs that have been made with a woven cane. Cane is a type of natural material made from the stem of a tropical plant. The process of chair caning involves weaving the cane material through the seat of the chair to create a tight, durable surface. It is often used to restore antique or vintage chairs, so they look as they should, and also can safely be sat on!  It is also one of the old traditional crafts of England, that is passed on from one generation to the next.

A young exponent of a traditional skill

Millie Flack is a young exponent of this old traditional skill.  She is based in Barley, Hertfordshire,  nears the Cambridgeshire/Essex border.  She has spent some years learning the craft, and intends to pass it on to the next generation in due course. She’s an expert in bringing old cane chairs back to life, making them look as good as new. She understands that chairs have both financial and sentimental value, so always treat them with great respect.
